Michael Welch captures dramatic video of twister from a KFC parking lot in Newcastle, Oklahoma.

By Jeff Black, Staff Writer, NBC News

Michael Welch was midshift into his job at KFC in Newcastle, Okla., on Monday afternoon when he noticed hail pounding the parking lot outside the restaurant.

Then, as he looked into the distance, he saw the wall cloud of an enormous tornado rotating in front of him.

“It was very large and very fast,” he said.  “I could see debris flying all over.”

The 24-year-old cook grabbed his HTC cell phone and dashed into the parking lot and started recording video. “Probably not the best thing to do, but I did it.”

Most of his coworkers took shelter, but his manager stayed at the door while he filmed, Welch said.

“Oh, my God!” he screams on his video — seen by thousands on NBC News and YouTube — as the tornado, which killed at least 24 people and injured scores more in the area, passes.

He said an F4 tornado that hit his house in Blanchard on May 24, 2011, helped alleviate his fear.

“I think that gave me the courage to go ahead and go outside,” he said. “The power of the funnel cloud was amazing.”

He said he had no idea a storm was coming until he saw it with his own eyes.

But now, his YouTube video showing a street-level view of the massive tornado plowing through Newcastle and Moore stands as an iconic record of the day’s event.

“I’ve talked to so many people today I can’t even count ,” he said.

Crews comb devastation in Oklahoma; confirmed death toll lowered to 24

By Erin McClam and Alastair Jamieson, NBC NewsRescue teams combed through pulverized buildings and splintered homes early Tuesday after one of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history blasted through Oklahoma City and its suburbs, killing at least 24 people, including nine children. The confirmed death toll from the Oklahoma medical examiner was lowered from an earlier figure of 51, illustrating the confusion as day broke over the shattered city of Moore. Authorities cautioned that the toll could change again. In Moore, where police said 19 people had been killed, entire blocks appeared as though they had been razed, and cars were mangled beyond recognition. Piled up where houses once stood were scraps of wood, clothes, glass and metal. At least 120 people were injured in what President Barack Obama called “one of the most destructive tornadoes in history.”Children were among the many missing after the tornado struck Monday afternoon and delivered a direct hit to two elementary schools. Seven children drowned in a pool of water at Plaza Towers Elementary School, which was all but leveled, officials said. The twister also laid waste to a hospital.

“It’s absolutely huge. It’s horrific,” Gov. Mary Fallin said on NBC’s TODAY. “It looked like somebody set off something that destroyed structures. Not blocks, but miles.”

The threat was not over: Lightning flashed over rescue and cleanup crews, and forecasters warned that more “large and devastating” tornadoes were possible, with big cities in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas also at risk.

Cindy Wilson texts friends after her home was destroyed in the afternoon tornado. Cindy and her husband took cover in their home’s bathtub when the tornado hit.

Terry Watkins of the Department of Emergency Management said 101 people had been found alive by search teams.

The death toll was revised after authorities determined that some people had been counted twice in the chaos after the storm, said Amy Elliott, a spokeswoman for the medical examiner.

The dead included the 19 in Moore and five in southern neighborhoods of Oklahoma City, said Moore police Sgt. Jeremy Lewis. The children killed included the seven at Plaza Towers and one at Briarwood Elementary School, he said.

Children from Plaza Towers told of hearing sirens and running into a hall for cover, some still carrying their math books. A teacher, Rhonda Crosswhite, said she huddled with students in a bathroom stall and draped herself over them for cover as the storm hit.

“One of my little boys, he just kept saying, ‘I love you, I love you, please don’t with me, please don’t die with me,’” she told TODAY. “But we’re OK. And we made it out, and it finally stopped.”

She said all her students were accounted for.

Damian Britton, a fourth-grader, credited “Miss Crosswhite” with saving his life. He estimated it took about five minutes for the twister to pass through before the students emerged from cover to survey the damage and check on their classmates.

“It was just a disaster,’’ he said. “There was just a bunch of stuff thrown around and the cars were tipped over, and it smelled like gas.”

The tornado tore the roof off the elementary school about 3 p.m. local time. It was not clear how many children still were missing.

Rescuers walked through mile after mile of obliterated homes on Monday night, listening for voices calling out from the wreckage. At one hospital, 85 patients, including 65 children, were being treated for minor to critical injuries.

“We thought we died because we were inside the cellar door,” Ricky Stover said while surveying the devastated remains of his home. “It ripped open the door and just glass and debris started slamming on us, and we thought we were dead, to be honest.”

At the city’s St. Andrews United Methodist Church, parents listened as the names of surviving children were read out through a bullhorn Monday night, The Associated Press reported. While some families hugged each other as they were reunited, others were left to wait, fearing the worst as the night dragged on.

“As long as we are here … we are going to hold out hope that we will find survivors,” Trooper Betsy Randolph, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, told Reuters.

The twister cut a path similar to a tornado outbreak that ravaged Oklahoma and Kansas on May 3, 1999, killing 46 people and damaging or destroying more than 8,000 homes. Wind in that outbreak was clocked at 318 mph, the fastest ever recorded.

The twister was a mile wide at its base, according to The Weather Channel. A reporter for KFOR said the tornado kicked up a cloud of debris perhaps two miles wide. The National Weather Service initially classified the storm as an EF4, the second-strongest type, with winds of 166 to 200 mph.

Obama declared a major disaster, making federal aid available to people in five counties.

“In an instant, neighborhoods were destroyed, dozens of people lost their lives, many more were injured, and among the victims were young children trying to take shelter in the safest place they knew, their school,” he said from the White House. “So our prayers are with the people of Oklahoma today.”

Expressions of grief and support came from across the world. Queen Elizabeth II extended her deepest sympathies, and Pope Francis said on Twitter: “I am close to the families of all who died in the Oklahoma tornado, especially those who lost young children. Join me in praying for them.” House Speaker John Boehner ordered flags at the Capitol to half-staff.

Relief efforts sprang up. The Red Cross said it was opening a shelter, and the University of Oklahoma opened some of its housing for displaced families. People took to Facebook in hopes that storm victims might reclaim family photos that landed in yards many miles away.

Aerial pictures of the destruction brought to mind Joplin, the Missouri town virtually wiped off the map two years ago when an EF5 tornado killed 158 people and caused $2.8 billion in damage.

Joplin city officials said Monday they were sending a team of 10 officers and three firefighters to Moore to help. “Giving back in whatever way we can,” the mayor said on Twitter.

The tornado Monday also came one day after another cluster of storms in Oklahoma that killed two elderly men in the town of Shawnee. Tens of millions of people from Texas to the Great Lakes — an area covering 55 million people — had been warned to brace for the severe weather.

Our jobs consists in doing in a few days what our competitors do in one year.

I stated watching Netflix Hemlock Grove last night and had consumed 5 episodes and if I hadn’t have to have gotten up early this morning for work .. I would have watched more .. I read mixed reviews some of them negative on The Verge here is

First Trailer — HEMLOCK GROVE — A Netflix Original Series [HD]

Hemlock Grove “The Monster is Within” Transformation – Netflix (HD)

This is pretty cool .. along the lines of some of Criss Angel’s awesomeness.. enjoy

Like most young men, high school senior Jake Davidson finds Kate Upton attractive. So attractive that he couldn’t contain himself from asking her to go as his date to his senior prom. He created this video and tweeted it to her:

It’s clever enough to make you look past the obvious low production value (I say as I sip my tea, pinky finger high in the air, then nod and look at you through my monocle). It features his dog, some nice word play, and enough self-deprecation that it might just work.

Oh Wait It Did Work!

And that, my friends, is how this kid fucked himself over.

Going to prom with Kate Upton is a terrible idea for many reasons.

1. All The Other Girls At School Will Now Hate You – What? They’re not good enough for you? A girl has to be a supermodel to go out with you? What makes you so special? This stunt isn’t going to win you over with the girls who would have actually put out which brings us to…

Best. Bride. Ever.

2. You’re Not Getting Laid – Your chances were low to begin with, but now that your date is Kate Upton, your chances are a scientifically accurate 0%. Kate Upton doesn’t put out for just anyone (She and I talked about her sexual conquests a lot the other morning while she ate the breakfast I cooked for her after my pickup line, ‘Hey, what kind of breakfast do you like? Because I’m going to make it for you after we bone all night long.” Completely worked). The closest you’re going to get to any action is pressing your face up against her chest. Which leads us to…

This is from America. You’re welcome, world.
3. Blue Balls – You’re going to be in a TON of pain. If you can walk by the end of the night, then you might just be a fucking superhero because your nuts are going to be as blue as the bluest blue you’ve ever seen. When you get home, rubbing one out is going to feel like masturbating with sand paper. Enjoy!

Enjoy prom night!

4. You’re Going To Discover Which Teachers Are Really Weird – You know that chemistry professor you thought was cool? Well, when he keeps trying to talk to your date about “cool chemical reactions” and “explosions,” you’re going to be real embarrassed.

5. You’ll Be Sad Forever – The next morning… Alone. Sad. Tears from the horrific self-session from hours ago still dried on your face. You’ll realize you’re just Jake Davidson, high school senior, that guy who took Kate Upton to prom. And you’ll cry some more.

This is a warning to everyone out there: don’t ask hot supermodels to prom. It only leads to a life of despair.

ou

The entire night in GIF metaphor.

My Take:  Jake Davidson strapped on a man sized set of nuts and went for it .. good going Jake! Wouldn’t it be great for you if you actually went to the prom with beautiful Kate and she was so smittin with you that you got lucky with her afterwards? ..awww only in America .. well it’s not going to happen Jake.. but who knows maybe in an alternate universe  you’ll end up having sex with beautiful Kate … fall in love and get married … Ogabb

The owner of 8 North Carolina outlets says health care will cost him a store’s worth of profits. The growing burger chain — which counts the president as a fan — has distanced itself from that complaint.

Just a few years back, a then-upstart Five Guys Burgers and Fries got a visit from President Barack Obama and rode the exposure to a still-burgeoning coast-to-coast burger empire.

On Monday, a Five Guys franchisee in North Carolina returned the favor by saying that, according to The Washington Examiner, the president’s new health care law is forcing him to put plans for new stores on hold and may result in higher prices for burgers. Mike Ruffer, a former Marriott (MAR +0.27%) executive who owns eight Five Guys restaurants in the Raleigh-Durham area, told attendees of a seminar dedicated to the new health care law and hosted by the Heritage Foundation that all the profits from one of his eight outlets would have to be dedicated to health care and that “any added costs are going to have to be passed on.”

Five Guys headquarters, perhaps with the president’s 2009 visit to a Five Guys in its Washington, D.C., birthplace in mind, immediately put a few peanut bags’ worth of distance between itself and Ruffer.

“Mike Ruffer is a franchisee of Five Guys and independent business owner,” Molly Catalano, director of communications and public relations, wrote in an email to The Huffington Post. ”He does not represent Five Guys on this or any other subject matter.”

Restaurant owners haven’t exactly checked their disdain for the new law requiring employers with more than 50 full-time workers to provide health care coverage for them or be fined $3,000 per worker. Chief executives and franchise owners for Denny’s (DENN 0.00%), Papa John’s (PZZA +0.64%), DineEquity‘s (DINE) Applebee’s, Wendy’s (WEN -0.18%), Darden Restaurants (DRI -0.51%), Whole Foods Market (WFM +0.17%) and others have all bemoaned the new expenses and have publicly suggested that they will cut employee hours to avoid the mandate. A Denny’s franchisee in Florida went so far as to suggest that customers pay a surcharge for it and deduct the amount from servers’ tips.

Five Guys appears to want no part of this discussion, lest it stifle the chain’s exponential growth over the last decade. Five Guys began franchising in 2002 and has already grown to more than 900 locations across the U.S.

In 2011, it came in just below $1 billion in sales at $950.6 million but added more than 182 locations to land in a spot in QSR Magazine’s Top 25. Its sales increased 32.8% from 2010, according to research firm Technomic, while its $1.156 million in sales per restaurant in 2011 fell just below Burger King ($1.245 million) and topped Yum Brands‘ (YUM +0.15%) Pizza Hut ($875,000), KFC ($940,000), Sonic (SONC +0.57% $1 million) and Starbucks(SBUX -0.90% $1.14 million).

Franchisees are going to talk, but upstart chains like Five Guys tend to turn down the volume if keeps customers from coming in for a double and a sack of fries

My take on this is it is just another example that leads me to not like Nationalized Health Care .. or as I like to call it .. Obama fucking us in our ass holes .. We are not kids .. as I understand this “new tax”  or what is the term I heard “financial patriotism” by us middle class . it is going to hurt a lot of people .. it will probably keep a lot of people from getting tax refunds and possibly going in the hole.  It is also my concern that once it has its teeth set into us .. even the republicans will not repeal it. .

Well to all the people who voted Obama back in .. are you happy now?

Numerous images of sinkholes that left deep impressions around the globe

When late Florida resident Jeffrey Bush was swallowed deep into the maw of a sinkhole that opened up beneath his bedroom recently, it brought to light the spontaneous horror that Mother Nature is capable of. The holes, caused by chemically dissolving rock, can range in size from roughly 3 feet to a monstrous 2,000 feet, and can form quite suddenly, as exemplified by the tragedy in Florida. Check out these 18 images from around the planet — sinkholes aren’t particular — that’ll make you think twice about where you step.

Human trafficking – Modern Day Slavery exists people. Watch your daughters. It happens in the best of neighborhoods.

By Marion Brooks, NBCChicago.com
CHICAGO — Alex Campbell was an expert in his field, according to authorities.

His “field” was the underground world of human trafficking, known familiarly as pimping and prostitution, and Campbell, according to investigators with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, was a master pimp.

“On a scale of one to 10, he’d be a 12,” said DHS investigator Gary Hartwig. “I’ve been in law enforcement for 24 years, and he is actually the worst case of human trafficking we’ve identified in Chicago. Probably nationally.”

Prosecutors call Campbell a “predator” and say he targeted foreign-born women with questionable legal status. They say he’d use their precarious status, coupled with heavy doses of violence and intimidation, to control the women and force them into “a form of modern-day slavery.”

Last November a federal judge sentenced Campbell to life in prison. It’s believed to be the first time a “pimp” has been sentenced to life in prison for human trafficking in federal court in Chicago.

The federal case against Campbell was bolstered by four women who came forward to testify against him in court. In an effort to protect her identity, NBC Chicago will identify one woman only as “Sarah.”

‘It still hurts so bad’
In a sit-down interview late last month, Sarah said was completely controlled by Campbell to the point where she felt she might lose her life if she dared to disobey him.

“He told me many times that he would kill me,” she recalled.

Prosecutors believe Campbell was grooming Sarah to become a prostitute. It started, they say, with Campbell giving her a legitimate job at one of his Chicago-area massage parlors. They say he then became her friend and eventually her boyfriend. Attorneys say he then began to isolate her and beat her. Then he literally branded her.

“I still have those tattoos, and I can’t get rid of them,” Sarah said. “I’m trying to remove them for a long time — like two years — and they are still not coming off. It still hurts so bad.”

Investigators say Campbell branded most all of his victims. On one woman, they say he tattooed an manifesto so long it covered almost her entire back.

“For him, it let the world know that these women belonged to him,” said assistant United States Attorney Diane MacArthur, part of the team that prosecuted Campbell.

Steve Grimes, another assistant U.S. Attorney, said the women would have to explain the markings on their bodies for the rest of their lives anytime they met someone new.

“That was part of his plan,” said Grimes.

More news from NBCChicago.com

In court, prosecutors also alleged that Campbell would exact fines from the women he controlled. In the case of one victim, he levied a fine of $14,000 for her to get a green card. She got another $5,000 “fine” simply because she didn’t call him.

A recording of a phone call between Campbell and that woman was played in open court:

Woman: “You telling me that I didn’t call you, that’s why I have to give you $5,000?”

Campbell: “I said you got to give me $5,000 … and you gonna pay it —.”

Woman: “Yes. You told me –”

Campbell: ” … because you are — listen! This is my last word to you, and you’d better be glad I’m giving you up to f—ing Sunday to f—ing bring a f—ing-a-s payment in. If you don’t f—ing bring in at least $500 mother-f—ing dollars, we will go to f—ing war. Now get my mother-f—ing money.”

Sarah said that in Campbell’s world, beatings were common and intimidation was constant. He even used blackmail, she said, taking a page right from one of two books investigators found in his possession: “The Pimp’s Bible.”

“[Sarah] tried to get away,” said Grimes. “He forced her to drink alcohol and made her have sex with another woman while he videotaped this. He then threatened to send that video to her family, to expose her, if she did not come back into his grasp.”

In court documents, attorneys for Campbell said he maintained his innocence and challenged the allegation that Sarah and others were being held against their will.

“Each expected something from him,” Campbell’s attorneys state in the court documents. “Each was more than happy to accept what he gave; all this before the relationships turned ugly.”

Prosecutors and investigators said they’re pleased with the fact that Campbell received a life sentence in court.

“In the truest form of the word, he is a predator,” said Grimes.

Sarah eventually escaped from Campbell and reported him to police. She is now married and doing well.

And if someone thinks it can’t happen to them, Sarah says to think again.

“It happens,” she said. “It can happen easily to anyone.”

Indicators of Human Trafficking:

  • Is the victim in possession of identification and travel documents? If not, who has control of the documents?
  • Was the victim coached on what to say to law enforcement and immigration officials?
  • Was the victim recruited for one purpose and forced to engage in some other job?
  • Is the victim’s salary being garnished to pay off a smuggling fee? (Paying off a smuggling fee alone is not considered trafficking.)
  • Was the victim forced to perform sexual acts?
  • Does the victim have freedom of movement?
  • Has the victim or family been threatened with harm if the victim attempts to escape?
  • Has the victim been threatened with deportation or law enforcement action?
  • Has the victim been harmed or deprived of food, water, sleep, medical care or other life necessities?
  • Can the victim freely contact friends or family?
  • Is the victim a juvenile engaged in commercial sex?
  • Is the victim allowed to socialize or attend religious services?

If you have any evidence of human trafficking, or if you are aware of anyone who is being exploited for prostitution, you should call investigators at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security at 1-866-347-2423.
